GOD’S MISTAKE

Loneliness is the first thing

which God’s eye named,

not good. ---Milton

He didn’t pay attention

when a lone leaf floated

slowly down from the sky

and left loneliness in it’s wake.

The sour feeling

of self-pleasuring,

drinking, drugging,

overeating, nail-biting,

gambling, teeth-gnashing,

pillow-hugging, —an endless

river of torment.

It whacks teenagers

on the side of the head,

but saves the worst

for the aged, widowed

and the infirm.

God doesn’t realize

what humans do to avoid

the misery of solitude

in a naked world.

Flush with love, bodies

cling to each other

in a quest to decipher

the frequency of another soul.
